TEAM ADVICE

Why should I get my car checked:

Regularly servicing your car can make the difference between it running smoothly and efficiently. Servicing reduces the risk of it breaking down and incurring an expensive and unexpected repair. It can be a false economy to avoid regular car servicing. The service schedule for your vehicle will depend on the manufacturer and also depend on the car’s mileage and age.

MOT

mot.png

Why does my vehicle need an MOT?

MOT stands for "Ministry of Transport". The MOT test refers to the testing carried out by Department for Transport Approved garages to determine whether vehicles are roadworthy. Private vehicles that are three years old or more, cannot be driven on public roads in the UK unless they have been issued with a VT20 pass certificate by an approved garage. However, an insured vehicle can be driven to an MOT Testing Centre for a scheduled test.

The test now covers the car’s body, including the doors, tyres, wheels, windscreen and also seats, seat belts, mirrors, horns, windscreen wipers and vehicle suspension. The testers also examine the fuel and exhaust system and check that the vehicle emissions meet department standards. Registration plates and vehicle identification numbers are checked. The electrical system including battery and all visible wiring are tested for safety. Relevant warning lamps are also checked for correct operation.

Who can perform MOT tests?

Only Department for Transport approved garages and approved examiners can perform MOT tests, and only an approved garage can issue a (MOT) safety certificate.

What happens if the Vehicle passes or fails?

Vehicles that pass the MOT test are issued with an MOT Certificate which is valid for one year from the date of the test.

If your vehicle fails the MOT test you will be issued with a failure/refusal VT30 Certificate. The failed vehicle can then have the repairs carried out at Hamilton Motors or a designated garage of choice. Retesting should be done at the same testing centre that issues the failure certificate.

If the repairs are carried out within 10 days of the original test no further charge for the MOT retest will be incurred unless stated at the time of the test. Please note, retests are at the discretion of the relevant testing centre.

If you wish to check that your vehicle has a current MOT test certificate you can check via the VOSA website here:
